Home Learning
Reading
We are absolutely delighted to see that so many children are reading more at home! This growing enthusiasm for reading is beginning to impact on their learning in school. Regular reading not only helps to develop fluency and confidence, but it also strengthens writing and spelling skills. As children expand their vocabulary and understanding of language, they are better able to express their ideas and engage with a wide range of subjects. Strong reading habits lay the foundation for success across the entire curriculum, and we are so proud of the progress the children are making so far.
Like last term, reading at least five times a week to an adult at home would be ideal. Sarah will try to listen to most of the children read throughout the week, alongside delivering reading intervention for some. The books will still continue to be changed
on a Thursday, but will only be changed if Sarah can see they have been read at home by seeing this recorded in their reading records, as it is important that they progress through the phonic books systematically.
Accelerated Reader
Some children have now come off the RWInc phonic programme and are beginning to access books on the Accelerated Reader programme. This programme allows the children to choose their books and then quiz on them. The children can choose up to three books within their level. Each Wednesday, they will have the opportunity to quiz and change their books. Please come and have a chat with me if you would like more information.
Spelling
Last term I sent home a sheet with Year 1 and 2 common exception words. Practicing spelling these words would really help with the flow of their writing. In addition, practising spelling other words by trying to use their knowledge of speed sounds (special friends) would also benefit their writing and confidence.
Maths
If you would like to do any maths at home with your child, below lists some areas you could cover:
- Number bonds/pairs to 10 and 20
- Know by heart 5 + ? = ? (5+1 = 6, 5+2 =7, 5+3=8, 5+4)=9
- Know by heart numbers that add up to 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9
- Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s
- Take part in any practical maths around the home, e.g. cooking, measuring and money
- Hit the button online program - this is a free game that can be accessed on a phone, tablet or computer. We use this every day in school and it really helps the children learn recall facts which makes understanding maths concepts easier.
- Numbots and Times Table Rockstars – This is an online program where the children can practise recall facts.
- I am also happy to provide worksheets in areas of maths the children feel less confident about. Please let me know if you would like this.
P.E
Our P.E days this term are Tuesdays and Thursdays. The children can wear PE kit to school on those days. Please can they wear or bring a hoodie to wear in PE. If they are attending an after school sports club, they will need to bring in their PE kit to change into after school.
Please don’t hesitate to email me or arrange an appointment to see me if you have any concerns about your child or their work. My email address is juliette@stoke-climsland.cornwall.sch.uk or contact me on Class Dojo.
Thank you for your support,
