Class 3 Autumn 1 2023
Dear parents,
Welcome back to a new school year and welcome to Year 3! Year 3 can be a big difference and step up from KS1, so, to start with, the children will be very tired and perhaps a little daunted. This is normal and they will soon settle into learning in KS2. I am really excited about working with your children and am looking forward to the progress they are going to make.
This term’s history project is based on the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age periods. On the school website, you will find a Project map outlining the children’s learning for this half term.
Below lists more detail about the children’s learning in English and maths:
English
· Individual reading, group reading, reading comprehension lessons and guided reading sessions
· Spellings/phonics – differentiated depending on ability
· Identifying where full stops should go in a sentence
· Understanding sentence structure
· Nouns, adjectives and verbs
· Use of capital letters
· Joined handwriting
Maths
Place value of numbers up to 1000. This includes:
· Understanding the values of thousands, hundreds, tens and ones
· Ordering numbers to 1000
· Understanding the place value of numbers on a number line
Parent welcome meeting
There will be a Year 3 parent welcome meeting in the classroom on Thursday 14th September, at 3.15pm.
Home Learning
Reading
Many of the children will be accessing a reading programme called Accelerated Reader. This means that they will take an online reading test which will then give them a reading level. They then choose books within their level and quiz on them after reading. The quizzing is fun and it can make reading more enjoyable for reluctant readers. Please come and see me if you would like more information about Accelerated Reader (AR).
However, not all children are on the AR programme, some children are on coloured RWI phonic band reading books. These books will be chosen by an adult. Some children may have both RWI phonic band books and AR books that they can choose themselves.
Reading is the key to all learning. Over half the class are reading below the expected standard for their age group and it is an absolute priority to raise their attainment. Improving their reading means they are more successful in other areas of the curriculum and can access it more easily. It is essential that an adult listens to a child read on a daily basis. In school, every effort is made to listen and support your child’s reading, however, it is essential that they are listened to at home too. Please could an adult at home listen to your child read at least four times a week? For most children this means making sure they are reading the correct word and understanding what is happening in the book. Please could this be recorded in their reading record so we know what book or pages they have read? The children will take home their reading books and reading record every day. Please can they make sure they bring them into school every day too because we will need to listen to them read on a daily basis. Each time they read to an adult at home, they can put a tick next to their name on a reading rewards chart in class. At the end of the week, the child with the most ticks receives a little reward from my reward box.
Maths
· Practise counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 100s
· Practise counting in 4s, 8s and 50s
· Take part in any practical maths around the home, e.g. cooking, measuring and money
· Adding and subtracting numbers using mental strategies, e.g. their fingers
Outdoor learning
The class will be participating in outdoor learning each week this term. Please ensure they have outdoor shoes and a waterproof coat in school every day. For outdoor learning, they will need waterproof trousers and wellies. This can be left on their peg all week.
P.E
Our P.E days this term are Monday and Friday. The children can wear PE kit to school on those days. If they are attending an after school sports club, they will need to bring in their PE kit to change into after school.
Please don’t hesitate to email me or arrange an appointment to see me if you have any concerns about your child or their work. My email address is juliette@stoke-climsland.cornwall.sch.uk or contact me on Class Dojo.
Thank you for your support,
