Class 4 Summer 2 2024

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the final term of the year! Hope you have all enjoyed the half term break and are ready to enjoy all the fun that summer term 2 brings. We have had a year full of wonderful learning and exciting trips and opportunities and Summer 2 term is no different – preparation for our school production of the Hobbit, a trip to a wind farm as part of our Geography learning and a visitor linked to our Viking history project are some of things we can look forward to.

Our History project is ‘Vikings: raiders, traiders or settlers?’ During this project we will develop our understanding about why and how Vikings travelled to and settled in Britain and how it they lived in and changed the places they settled. We are having a Viking visitor on 27th June – if children wish to dress up in Viking inspired outfits they are welcome to do so (equally welcome to wear uniform!).

In English, we will be reading How to be a Viking by Cressida Cowell and Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman. We will explore the stories, look at features and create fact files as well as exploring explanation texts.

In Maths, we start the term with a times tables focus. The Multiplication Check will take place for Year 4 in the first couple of weeks of term. This involves children taking the government times tables check on an ipad/laptop. The children have been working so hard and making great progress so we will encourage them to try their best and we will try our best to ensure they do not feel under too pressure. Please see shared parent leaflet for more information. We will also be continuing work on fractions and exploring decimals before learning more about 2d shape and angles.

During the first half of the term, we will be spending time rehearsing the Hobbit. Year 4 have learnt the songs and will lead the singing in much of the show, they have been amazing and over the coming weeks we will be learning how the songs fit into the production. We are really lucky to be working with a talented, creative theatre production team and it is a great opportunity for all involved.

In science, we continue to explore the role of a taxonomist classifying living things and how habitats can change naturally as a result of human activity.

Year 4 are also taking part in the Food for Thought project which links our school and Calstock with a Ugandan school. We hope to grow a selection of foods such as salad leaves, radishes and beans in the next few weeks! We will then be sharing photos and information about what we are growing with our link school who will do the same with us. If you can help in any way or are able to offer any expertise of gardening please let me know.

Important dates (please see newsletter for full set of key dates)

  • Wind farm workshop and trip 13th June – letter to follow
  • Sports Day 19th June (reserve day 26th June)
  • Viking visitor (option to dress up) 27th June
  • Hobbit performances July 10th, 11th and 12th

PE will remain on Monday and Friday. Please ensure children have a coat, outdoor shoes, sun hat, sun cream, drinks bottle and reading book/record in school each day. We hope to take some of our learning in other subjects outside if the weather is kind and we will be gardening too so being prepared for all British weather is helpful!

Please get in touch if you have any questions or concerns about the term ahead. You can contact me via class dojo message or email shunter@stoke-climsland.cornwall.sch.uk.

All the best,
