Class 5 Autumn 1 2023

Dear Parents

Welcome back to a new academic year. I usually start my Autumn 1 letters by acknowledging the children’s excitement and trepidation that often goes with a change in teacher and year group. However, due to our transitional activities this past summer, I’m hoping that your child is less anxious about this! I must say that I’m really excited to continue teaching in Year 5 again and I’m delighted that we will have ample adult support in Mrs Ross, Mrs Parker, Mrs Milne and Mr Edwards this year. I’m completely confident that the children will love and appreciate their support and caring nature within the classroom, as will I.

As I’m sure you are well aware, we have several children within our school with severe nut allergies, so please remember that, according to school policy, no nuts or products containing nuts should be brought into school at any time. Since this allergy could have extremely serious consequences, please help me keep him safe by:

a) Avoiding giving children nuts or nut products in their packed lunches

b) Avoiding giving nuts or nut products or snacks/bars containing nuts for break time snacks

c) Avoiding supplying the school with cakes or food items containing nuts for birthday celebrations, sales or events

d) Avoiding sending containers such as cereal boxes for DT / Art lessons into school which may have contained produce made with nuts

Our project focus this half term is all about the Tudors. Children will learn about the changing nature of monarchy. They will study how both monarchs (Henry VIII and Elizabeth I) tried to control the public perception of themselves using portraits and royal progresses. Using Tudor inventories to investigate whether people were rich or poor, children learn about what life was like for people living in Tudor times

For more subject-specific detail about this half-term’s curriculum, please see the separate project map.

PE will be held on Mondays with myself and Thursdays with Mr Bain. The children will also have an outdoor learning session on Thursdays so please provide the children with appropriate clothing for the day, such as warm coat, waterproofs and wellies. As has been previously mentioned, children can continue to come into school wearing their PE kit on these days. The Y5 parent welcome meeting will take place on Monday 18th September at 3.15pm (straight after the end of school).

I think that is all the important information for now. Obviously, with Class Dojo and the tremendous teacher-parent communication that it provides, I will post details, updates (and polite requests!) throughout the year. If there are any specific questions that you may have at this stage, please don’t hesitate in sending me an instant message on Class Dojo or email me at: jamie@stoke-climsland.cornwall.sch.uk.

Thank you

Jamie Burchell
