Class 6 Spring 1 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope that you and your families had a wonderful Christmas break! It has been great to see the children return to school so rested and full of enthusiasm for the new term. We have hit the ground running in Year 6 and have already made a start on our new project: Brazil. We have also started learning about evolution and inheritance in Science (and, in R.E, how this links to Christian beliefs and interpretations). In English, we are learning about balanced arguments and we have already had some really quite animated debates regarding the issues raised in our Science and R.E!
In Maths, we are continuing our work on calculating with fractions, and will be beginning to look at imperial and metric measures. Please do take any opportunity to discuss these with your child in real-life contexts, such as when on journeys or when baking. It would really help support our work in class if you could also help your child practise converting between units of measurement. The most common metric units they will need to convert between are as follows:
· kilometres and metres
· centimetres and metres
· centimetres and millimetres
· grams and kilograms
· litres and millilitres.
Our Project, based on Brazil, will incorporate the following areas of learning:
· The human and physical features of Brazil.
· The climate in Brazil and how this compares with that of the United Kingdom.
· Investigating the main reasons why so many Brazilians have moved from the north of the country to the south, and making comparisons with push/pull factors in the United Kingdom.
· Comparing the lives of young people in Brazil with their own lives
For additional subject-specific detail about this half-term’s curriculum, please see the separate project map.
PE will continue to be held on Tuesdays with Mr Bain and on Fridays with myself. The children will also have an outdoor learning session on Tuesday so please provide your child
with appropriate clothing for the day, such as waterproofs and wellies. Children can continue to come into school wearing their PE kit on these days.
Supporting your child at home
Fluency in the times tables up to 12 x 12 (and the related division facts) makes a real difference in children’s ability to access and progress through the Year 6 curriculum, and beyond. If your child is not yet confident with their times tables, please support them in learning and practicing them regularly. Each child has a personal login for Times Tables Rockstars. Please follow the following link to log in. https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school/student
Please also continue to encourage your child to read for a minimum of 20 minutes (ideally half an hour) at least 5 times a week.
Thank you for your ongoing support
With kind regards,
Miss Donna Harris
