Reception Class Summer 1 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you had a lovely Easter break. This half-term we will be exploring the project ‘Above and Below the Sea.’ To spark the children’s ideas we have been watching videos and reading books about underwater sea creatures. The children are keen to learn about different forms of sea life. We will also compare and contrast where we live to other countries. We are excited to see where our learning will take us and are looking forward to a busy term and spending lots of time outside.

Phonics

This half-term we are continuing to focus on blending words for reading and segmenting for spelling and we are working towards the children being able to write their own independent sentences. The children will continue to work on correct letter formation and pencil control. Your help practising these skills at home would be greatly appreciated. Please also look out for the high frequency words (red words) that will be sent out in bookmark form in your child’s book bag for you to practise together at home.

Reading

Thank you for continuing to have your child’s reading books in their book bag in school each day. The children will read with an adult at least twice a week. We read the children’s book bag books with them and the children also take part in daily paired reading. It has been wonderful to see their progress. Please continue to support your child to read their school reading books at least 3 times a week. If you are finding anything difficult with reading at home, please let me know. We will be having another informal class workshop after school on how to support reading at home, where we will discuss possible reading tips. Please look out for the date to be confirmed soon. It would be lovely to see you there.

Maths

This half-term we will be working with numbers 0-20. This will involve counting and ordering them, finding a total of two groups, 1 more and 1 less, doubling, halving and sharing. The areas we will be focusing on are:

  • Counting on and counting back
  • Numbers to 20
  • Numerical Patterns

You could practise these skills at home by ordering numeral cards, playing board games that encourage adding and taking away or games such as snap. Number formation is also a fun activity to do using a whiteboard and pen.

School Trip - The Aquarium

We are really excited for our class trip to the Plymouth Marine Aquarium on Wednesday 7th May. Please see the letter with details being sent out shortly. If you haven’t already, please make sure that you have created your ParentPay account.
