Reception Class Summer 2 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you had a chance to enjoy the half-term break and the children had a lovely time. Here we are at the last half-term of the year! This half-term we will be exploring the topic ‘On the Move’. The children have had lots of great ideas for our new project. Please see the attached project map detailing what we will be covering. We will be following the children’s interests and planning accordingly. The children are interested in different vehicles, so we will being doing lots of learning around different forms of transport.

Reading

It has been fantastic to see all of the regular reading happening at home. It has had a massive impact on the children’s learning, thank you. We will be continuing with the expectation of children reading at home three times a week and the children will read with an adult at least two times a week or more at school. If you would like any support or guidance on reading at home, then please do ask. If you are interested in your child continuing their reading in the summer holidays, you may like to try the summer reading challenge in your local library (further information will be sent out on this). They also have early reading books, which are great to use to help your child keep their skills ticking over during the holidays.

Maths

The children have made fantastic progress with their maths learning. We will be covering our learning through the Power Maths scheme of learning and through the NCETM Maths Mastery programme. We will be covering:

  • Doubling
  • Halving and sharing
  • Odds and evens
  • Composing and decomposing shapes
  • 2D and 3D shapes
  • Sorting into 2 groups

You may like to practise number bonds to 5 and then 10 at home. At school we practise the sentence ‘5 is made from 3 and 2’. The children hold their fingers up as they say the sentence. You could also try subitising. Can the children roll a die or look at a group of objects and know how many there are without counting? Board games and singing nursery rhymes are always beneficial. As a class we like to sing counting songs using the website https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/nursery-rhymes-songs-index/zhwdgwx

Transition

Later this half-term, the children will begin their transition into Year One. In order that the children feel confident about moving onto their next class, we will be having a number of transition activities. The Year One team will spend some time working with the children and the children will enjoy exploring the Year One classroom. I will work closely with the Year One team to make sure that the children have a smooth transition. Both of our classes share many of the same features and teaching strategies which help the children to feel quickly settled in their new classroom.

Warmer Weather

Just another quick reminder that on the warmer days, children will need sun cream applied before they come to school and then we can help them to reapply their own sun cream at lunchtime. Children will need to bring in a named sun

cream which can either be left at school or returned at the end of the day. Children will also need a named sun hat. It would be great if the children can still bring in a thin coat or jumper/cardigan every day due to the unpredictability of our weather.

Diary Dates

- Sports Day will be held on Wednesday 25th June, with a reserve date on Wednesday 2nd July (Please see the latest newsletter for details)

- Summer Fair-Friday 27th June
