Home Learning

Reading

I delighted to say that most of the class are now beginning to come off the RWInc phonic programme and can access books on the Accelerated Reader programme. This programme allows the children to choose their books and then quiz on them. It is important that they are still reading these books to an adult at home regularly, so they can make progress. They will be able to quiz these books on a Wednesday, so please ensure books and reading records are brought to school on this day. Please come and have a chat with me if you would like more information.

Mrs Yardley will be listening to some children throughout the week, but not all. She will be supporting with improving their fluency; so you may see ‘Speedy green words’, ‘red words’, ‘common exception words’ or ’60 second read’ written in their reading records.

Again, this term, we are continuing to focus on the fluency of reading. This means how well the children can read the words without blending the sounds and improving the pace of their reading. The children will be supported with this in reading lessons and/or a phonic group); working with a volunteer teacher once a week and through their reading of ‘red words’, ‘common exception words’ and ’60 second read’ with Mrs Yardley.

Maths

This term we are focussing heavily on the automaticity of recalling number facts. This is where children, when asked to work out e.g. 5+4, they can answer straightaway without using fingers. Automaticity of number facts is crucial in mathematics because it allows students to recall basic arithmetic facts quickly and effortlessly, freeing up cognitive resources for more complex problem[1]solving and reasoning tasks. When learners do not have to expend mental energy on simple calculations, they can focus on understanding mathematical concepts, recognizing patterns, and applying strategies effectively. This fluency builds confidence and will make it easier for them when they attempt the maths curriculum in KS2.

We are working really hard in class on these facts and support with this at home would really help. If you would like to do any maths at home with your child, below lists the recall facts we are focussing on:

  • Number bonds/pairs to 10 and 20
  • Addition and subtraction within 10 and 20, e.g 4+5, 4+3, 9-4, 17-5
  • Learning their 2, 5 and 10 multiplication and division facts

Outdoor Learning

The class will continue to be participating in outdoor learning each week on a Tuesday. Please ensure they have outdoor shoes and a waterproof coat in school every day. For outdoor learning, they will need waterproof trousers and wellies. This can be left in the boxes outside the classroom.

P.E

PE this term continues to be on a Tuesday and a Thursday. The children can wear PE kit to school on those days. Please can they wear or bring a hoodie to wear in PE. If they are attending an after school sports club, they will need to bring in their PE kit to change into after school.

Geography Trip – Bude

This will take place on Friday 23rd May and I will send out a letter nearer the time.

Warmer Weather

The summer term is always a mixed bag when it comes to the weather. Please can the children make sure they bring a hat for sunny days and a coat in case of rain. They can bring sun cream in, but it is easier for them if it is applied at home before they come to school.

Please don’t hesitate to email me or arrange an appointment to see me if you have any concerns about your child or their work. My email address is juliette@stoke-climsland.cornwall.sch.uk or contact me on Class Dojo.

Thank you for your support,

Juliette Endacott (class teacher and maths subject lead)
